World Opera Day: 3 Operas to Watch This Weekend for Beginners!

As a voice and piano teacher, one of the questions I get asked a lot is “What opera should I watch if I’ve never seen one before?” In honor or World Opera Day 2020, that just passed on October 25th, I have created a list of my three favorite operas for the new opera fan, who is looking to get their feet wet with this incredible art form. I also highly recommend reading this well written and beautifully illustrated book, called “At the Opera” written by Ann Fiery and illustrated by Peter Malone, which gives eloquent descriptions of over 30 of the most iconic operas. Let me know what your favorites are in the comments below and enjoy!

3 OPERAS TO WATCH THIS WEEKEND FOR BEGINNERS:

1. THE MAGIC FLUTE (Die Zaüberflote) by W.A. Mozart

This opera filled with magical beings (and instruments) champions the theme that love triumphs over all. With its premiere in 1790, this opera is one of the most popular and most performed of all time. You can watch the Magic Flute in German or in English in many different platforms on Amazon.

2. CARMEN by G. Bizet

The music from Carmen is so iconic, from the overture to the habanera, it’s very likely that you will recognize a lot of it. The leading lady, Carmen, is as thrilling to watch as she is to listen to. You can also find this opera, sung in French, on Amazon.

3. LA BOHEMÈ by G. Puccini

This is my personal favorite of the three. Some of the most beautiful music every written is in La Bohemè, with a timeless story of love and loss. Set in Paris but sung in Italian, this opera is absolutely breathtaking. It’s no wonder why so many modern adaptations have been made and inspired by it, including the musical turned movie Rent and Moulin Rouge. There are many ways to experience La Bohemè from home, some of which are free on Amazon.
