This Too Shall Pass: How to Use Music to Stay Calm During Times of Uncertainty

Music has always been an outlet for me to relieve stress during times when I’ve felt anxious, uncertain, or down. I want to share these thoughts on how music can help you and the ones around you during these uncertain times, with the rising concerns surrounding COVID-19.

1. Listen to Chopin

Chopin is a composer who suffered greatly during his lifetime, where whether he realized it or not, his music would go on to be considered some of the most beautiful and tranquil in all of Western Classical Music. A few of my favorites are Nocturne Op. 9 No. 2 and Ballade No. 1 in G minor.

2. Listen to Music You Can Dance To

If you’re feeling pent up at home, turn on some music that makes you want to move, even it means tapping your foot, clapping your hands, or having your own private dance party. Try this classic disco hit or a modern groovy artist like Karen Harding and Anderson Paak.

3. Listen to Music that Reminds You of Summer

Warmer weather is right around the corner, and something that always puts me in a better mood is listening to a beachy soundtrack. Try this calming tune from Beach House, this windows-down-ballad by Real Estate or this easy listening track by Whitney.

How do you use music to help you during times of uncertainty or stress? I continue to be enlightened by my amazing students, who shared some wonderful strategies with me that they use to cope with stress, like saying a prayer, going for a run, or watching movies with motivating soundtracks. Share your thoughts in the comments below. Let’s use this time to unite and share the love, even if it means doing so virtually, (for now)!
