WHAT TO PACK FOR SUMMER YOUNG ARTIST, MAINSTAGE OPERA PROGRAMS, AND/OR KIDS MUSIC THEATER CAMPS
Summer programs are exciting and often life-changing experiences for performers of all levels, from youngsters, to young adults, to seasoned professionals. Here are some helpful packing tips to help you have a trip of a lifetime!
YOUNG ARTIST/MAINSTAGE OPERA PROGRAMS/KIDS SUMMER CAMPS ABROAD
After my most recent two trips to Europe, I’ve learned that the key to a great trip has a lot to do with packing light. I try and limit myself to one checked bag and one carry-on-item. The first thing you’ll want to think about before going abroad (aside from a current passport) is your luggage.
LUGGAGE TO LOVE
In general, people tend to dress up a bit more in Europe than we do in the U.S., so I like to bring a few scarves and wraps to throw over my shoulders if I am going into a church or a formal space. You’ll rarely see women wear short-shorts or dresses way above the knee, and even though the summer months are very hot in Europe, finding light, versatile pieces are key to keeping things stylish yet practical.
SCARVES AND WRAPS
WIDE LEG AND FLOWY PANTS are one of the best things to have when you’re abroad. There are so many different styles and prints out there that can be dressed up in the evening or worn casually during the day. And again - they keep you cool!
COMFORTABLE YET FASHIONABLE WALKING SHOES
FORMAL WEAR FOR CONCERTS AND PERFORMANCES can be tricky when space is limited to suitcases and carry-ons. You really can’t go wrong with a black tea or maxi-length dress. It can be made dressy by adding on the above wraps and a pair of low heels or wedge sandals.
MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS WORTH BUYING FOR ALL TYPES OF PROGRAMS
Sturdy Tote Bag for music/to take with you to the local markets
Portable Keyboard - this is SO useful when you are part of a program that may have limited practice rooms.
